The purpose and function of the Institute for Musical Perception is twofold. One, we do primary research into the Science of Music and the Science of how music is Percieved. Anything relating to sound interests us. How it is enhanced. How sounds interrelate and interact with each other. How these interactions are percieved and felt by listeners. How sounds work with the brain to create a language. How that language is expressed or "spoken". How to think about expressing that language. Understanding how human beings process sensory, especially heard, experiences and how those experiences can be enhanced. How creativity works, especially in music. Understanding the Spiritual (not to be confused with Religious) underpinnings of the creative process as it relates to sound and music. What the effects of musical performances are on the brain. How improvising or speaking music extemporaneously can enhance our understanding of written music. How to develop improvisational skills. How to activate creative impulses which are blocked. Understanding the musical mind. And, finally, how to develop skills in music which produce transcendental performances.
We have been investigating these phenomena for more than 25 years. Our function is to offer our discoveries and findings here on this site, in books, and in workshop and masterclass settings.
We are not affiliated with an academic institution because to do so would compromise the interest we have in the nature of spirituality, the Soul and how these are to be engaged in the acts of music making at all levels of the craft and Art. Since this investigative endeavor must be primary, it must also be conducted outside a scholastic environment (because scholarship is by definition a secondary form of investigation) We believe it to be essential that we follow our perceptual research into the Musical Arts free of all external encumberances as to where that research takes us.
If you are interested in learning more about our research, please contact us and ask. We would love to share with you what we have discovered.
